Terminology Standards

Scientific names change. Old names persist in patient records, insurance codes, and clinic notes for decades. Here is how The Order of the SWNs handles it.

One Standard. The Order of the SWNs.

The Order of the SWNs follows the 2022 Plotkin et al. international consensus and the 2026 international update. Outdated terms are not erased — the research behind them is still valid. They are corrected in place. Hover any crossed-out term for the full explanation.

If you see outdated language in your own medical records, insurance claims, or clinic notes — it is not wrong to bring these corrections to your provider. The terminology changed. The condition did not.

Neurofibromatosis Type 2— Order of the SWNsNF2-SWN
Neurofibromatosis Type 3— Order of the SWNsSchwannomatosis (SWN)
Bilateral Acoustic Neurofibromatosis— Order of the SWNsNF2-SWN
NF2-Related Schwannomatosis— Order of the SWNsNF2-SWN
Schwannoma, acoustic, bilateral— Order of the SWNsNF2-SWN — vestibular schwannomas
Why this matters for patients.Insurance denials, incorrect ICD-10 codes, and missed referrals often trace back to outdated terminology. A provider who records “neurofibromatosis type 2” may not think to refer to an NF specialty clinic — because they do not recognize the 2022 name. Terminology is not a formality. It is the filter through which every clinical decision passes.
